Displaying friends on your profile
In addition to your general list of friends, you can choose to feature specific friends (e.g., best friends, roommates or coworkers) or groups you're a member of in the left column of your profile.

Feature specific friends
You can either create new lists or feature existing friend lists. When you add someone to a featured list, they will receive a notification letting them know that you are featuring them on your profile. Follow these steps:
  1. Click the "Edit Profile" button in the top-right corner of your profile.
  2. Select "Featured People" from the left-hand menu.
  3. Under "Featured Friends," choose to add either an existing friend list or create a new one.
  4. When you’re done, click "Save Changes."

If you have selected multiple lists, you can change the order they appear on your profile. To do this, simply drag each list to where you’d like to place it. Then, click "Save Changes."

Feature groups you're a member of
To feature a group in the left column of your profile:
  1. Click the "Edit Profile" button in the top-right corner of your profile.
  2. Select "Featured People" from the left-hand menu.
  3. Under "Featured Friends," click "Add an existing list or group."
  4. Select the group you'd like to feature and click "Add."
  5. When you’re done, click "Save Changes."

The left column of your profile may display different types of people in your life:

We highlight your friend list.
By default, a changing selection of friends always appears under the "Friends" heading in the left column of your profile. The selection includes many friends who you publicly interact with the most. Examples of public interactions include Wall posts, comments and mutually attended events — Facebook will never show friends based on whose profiles you choose to view or who you interact with over messages and chat.

You can choose custom friends to highlight.
In addition to your general list of friends, you can choose to feature specific friends (e.g., best friends, roommates or coworkers) or groups to which you belong. Learn how to do this here.

Your family and relationship partner appear here, too.
If you choose to add family members or a relationship to your profile, those people will also be featured in the left column.

If you’re seeing a total number of friends that’s different from your real number of friends, it’s possible that some of them now have inactive accounts.

When someone’s account is inactive, it means that person can’t be seen or found on Facebook. Even though he or she is still counted as your friend, they won’t appear on your friend list anymore. This could happen when someone deactivates his or her account, or when someone’s account is disabled by Facebook.

  2. Type the title of your list and hit enter.
  3. Add people or Pages to the list by typing their names into the "Add to List" field or selecting them from the list.
  4. Select "Save List" to store your changes.

While status updates have been removed from the Friends page, they have been added in a separate filter on the home page. If you do not see this filter in your left hand menu immediately, just click the "More" link located beneath the menu.

Mutual friends are the people who are Facebook friends with both you and the person whose profile you are viewing. For instance, if you are friends with Chris, and Mark is friends with Chris, then Chris will be shown as a mutual friend when you are viewing Mark's profile.

You will never see mutual friends on your own profile page because you cannot have friends in common with yourself.

Facebook uses an algorithm to determine which people and Pages show up in the People You May Know section on your home page. If we do not find enough people or Pages that you are likely to know, then this box will not appear in the space. You can still utilize this feature from your home page by clicking the left side "Friends" link. Scroll to the bottom of the Friends page to see People You May Know.

Friendship pages
When you visit a friend's profile, the top-right corner of the profile displays your mutual friends and shared interests. Click the "See Friendship" link to visit your Friendship Page, where you can see even more things you share in common, including photos, event invites and more.

Friendship pages make it easier to view all of the content related to a specific friendship and help friends focus on their common histories. Friendship pages create a visual list of Wall posts exchanged, mutual friends, events both people attended, photos both people are tagged in, and things both people "like."

Click "See Friendship" below a Wall post between two friends. You will only be permitted to see the information between two people that their existing privacy settings already allow.

Friendship pages pull together information that you have already shared and respects all of your existing privacy settings. Others can access your friendship page with someone else if you and your friend have already shared this information with those viewing. Information you have restricted via privacy settings will remain invisible.
